Dear Members,
Slideroll's core server experienced approximately 3 hours of downtime today, May 8th 2008. This was due to a hard drive failure that required immediate replacement. Unfortunately this also required a reboot of the server.
Fortunately, no data was lost, as your slideshows are backed up in multiple locations and the hard drives have redundant copies.
The hard drive was replaced within 15 minutes, but the reboot takes about 2 hours because of the large volume of photos on the server.
I apologize if anyone experience any inconvenience due to this downtime. I am taking steps to reduce future downtime as a result of any possible hardware failures.
Thank you for your understanding, and please feel free to post any questions you have here.
Regards, Geoff

Hi Geoff,
It appears the slide show I labored over for two days is lost. Is the data being backed up now... or am I SOL?
Cheers...
Gregory

Gregory,
Unfortunately it appears that my hosting provider has restored the data from three days ago. I do not know why this has occurred. It is very upsetting that member data has been discarded in this way.
I am looking into this problem. Hopefully I will be able figure out why this has occurred and prevent it from happening again.
Thank you for your understanding.
Regards, Geoff

Whoa Geoff,
Unfortunately, data was lost and for me... precious time. A most unpleasant experience to say the least. Soooo, not everything was backed up multiple times, not even one time it appears. Hardware failures I can understand and I suppose "free is free", but I was seriously considering going pro... and now, with all due respect, I am having second thoughts.
Cheers...
Gregory

Gregory,
I totally understand your reservations, and I apologize for your lost time. The problem is that my service providers restored from an older backup - which in my belief was totally unnecessary.
Again, very sorry your slideshow was lost. I'm inquiring as to how this can occur, and am taking steps to ensure that it does not happen again.
Regards, Geoff

Hey Geoff,
No worries mate... in the process of creating my slide show, I learned the program, discovered a bug (which I will post to the appropriate forum when I have a chance), and generally speaking was extremely pleased, albeit temporarily, with the results. I can recreate my slide show in much less time on the second go round I suspect. No sense in beating a dead horse over this issue... don't hesitate however in giving your service provider a real earful!!
Cheers...
Gregory

I do appreciate your understanding! Unfortunately there will be a bit more downtime because I need to move to another server - this one is limping along but needs to be decommissioned. I'm trying to schedule it so that it occurs in the middle of the night.
Thanks again! Geoff
